Tinea Pedis (fungal infection of the foot)

This condition, classically known as athlete’s foot, is caused by a fungal infection. We have a variety of micro-organisms that grow on our skin and our skin needs to be slightly acidic to stop this from happening.

How does tinea occur?

  1. Moist wet socks especially with sweating
  2. Old mouldy shoes
  3. Small cuts to the skin.

All these components are perfect growing conditions for fungi. It will cause your feet to itch, smell and you can get red spots and peeling in areas.

How do we treat this?

  1. We diagnose whether it is tinea.
  2. We establish the most effective way to treat the infection. Some creams which you can buy from the chemist often work well. Oral treatments are not always very effective for this and shouldn’t be used unless it is a high risk problem
  3. We advise on a new pair of socks and if possible new shoes depending of what state your shoes are in.
  4. We have great Gewhol creams that can also assist with long term care for this condition which will also moisturize at the same time.
