Severs
|
Severs is a type of heel pain that can affect young boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 15. This condition results in pain which is felt on the back of the heel when you apply direct pressure. It is very easy to diagnose and is generally an easy problem to treat. The reason this injury occurs during this age group is because it is a time of rapid bone growth which results in pressure on the growth plate in the heel. Other common growth plates affected are in the lower leg (tibia) known as Osgood-Schlatter syndrome and in the foot Kohler’s syndrome.
How does it develop? It can affect any child especially those that are very active or walk around all day on their feet. This accumulation of activity results in excessive force through the Achilles which inserts into this part of the bone. It is made worse by inflexible shoes, tight calf muscles or worn-out old shoes.
How can Healthy Steps Podiatry help you?
- We can assess and diagnose the injury
- We can look at your child’s footwear and recommend if it is correct or it they need different shoes.
- We can give you a stretching programme to help it settle down after the acute phase.
- We can recommend devices which if accompanied by a good stretching regime will decrease the amount of force through the area and subsequently reduce pain
- We can provide orthotic innersoles to help stabilize the foot during activity.
