Diabetic Assessment
Diabetes can affect the feet in a number of different ways, so it is important to have them assessed regularly. High blood glucose levels can damage the nerves causing loss of feeling, numbness and pain in your feet and legs. You may also have narrowed blood vessels, reducing the supply of blood. As a result, wounds can take longer to heal and become infected more easily, leading to foot ulcers. More than one in ten foot ulcers results in an amputation. But research in the UK has found that around half of all amputations in people with diabetes can be prevented. The key is good foot care. At Healthy Steps Podiatry® we take your full medical history, including current medication, then assess the pulses in your feet, your circulation and any nerve damage. We also check that your footwear is suitable, then assess the soles of your feet to make sure there is no undue pressure from your shoes, looking out for calluses, blisters or corns. Following treatment, we advise you about how to prevent future harm to your feet and discuss the best ways to care for your skin and nails.
