OrthoticsĀ
Orthotics are shoe inserts that are designed to facilitate the way the foot works by correcting imbalances and easing pressure points. This can help to reduce pain not only in the foot but other parts of the body including the knee, hip, pelvis and spine. They can be used to tackle and prevent problems such as corns, calluses and ulcers; treat sport injuries; strengthen unstable joints and help deformed feet. Workers who spend a lot of time standing or walking can benefit from orthotics, as can sports people who often experience fewer injuries, better circulation and balance, improved endurance, performance and strength when using them. We sometimes prescribe them for children with a foot deformity and adults with arthritis or other conditions causing foot fatigue and discomfort. Certain types are produced by taking a plaster mould of your foot, which is used to custom-make a unique shoe insert tailored to the shape of your foot and designed to meet your specific needs. Rigid orthotic devices are intended to control motion and foot function, and may be made from a firm material such as plastic or carbon fibre. Soft orthotic devices are not made from a cast but are usually created using soft, compressible materials that are modified to suit your foot. They help to lessen shock, improve balance and take pressure off uncomfortable or sore spots. Semirigid orthotic devices are often prescribed for sports people because they allow the dynamic balance of the foot when running or participating in sports, while allowing the muscles and tendons to perform more efficiently.
