Nail Surgery
Ingrown toenails are the most common problem and can be very painful, often limiting the function of the foot. They can be caused by poor nail cutting or damaged nails and can feel extremely painful at the tip of the toe or all the way to the base. If the nail is not infected we can relieve the pain by trimming the corner of the nail, sometimes back to the cuticle. However, they often become infected or inflamed, leading to more serious complications, and should be treated immediately. Nail surgery can be carried out using a local anaesthetic. We treat the base of the nail with a chemical to help prevent the offending portion of nail regrowing; this is followed by a second visit to assess the healing and re-dress the toe. Nail surgery is also sometimes needed for thick nails that are difficult to cut and may be causing pain.
