Arthritis
At Healthy Steps Podiatry we understand the pain and disability associated with arthritis. Swollen ankles and joints are a common condition of arthritis. If you are experiencing pain in your feet or joints it will be affecting the way you walk. Our bodies are designed to support us through the millions of steps we take over a lifetime, however if we are not walking correctly it will affect other parts of our body. Swollen or sore joints will cause a change of gait which in turn causes pain in other parts of the body like the hips, knees and the lower back. Combine this with ill fitting shoes and you can see how much stress your joints, and in particular your feet, experience. A simple biomechanical and foot function assessment by your Healthy Steps Podiatrist will identify your specific needs and avoid further symptoms developing. Also, if you have arthritis you will know how important it is to stay active and mobile. If you can be active you can establish and maintain your ideal weight which will assist in protecting your joints and reducing stress on your feet. Added to this as we grow older the normal cushioning in our feet reduces and we have less natural shock absorbers working. The extra cushioning from a good pair of shoes, that fit well, can provide a great deal of comfort for your feet. Your shoes however should be regularly reviewed to ensure they are still working for you. Your podiatrist can recommend the best shoes for your foot type and monitor overall foot health. Avoidance of the usual foot complaints like callous, ingrown toenails and corns will help you feel more comfortable. We can also give practical advice on stretches and self massage to assist you in managing your arthritis.
